Some 25 asylum seekers have been fined five thousand euros on the Greek island of Chios for not having negative test results. The migrants had to quarantine for fourteen days after arrival and later received a form in Greek pushed under their noses upon registration. The countrys Greek police management has now bumped back its officers on duty.
It turned out to be a fine of thousands of euros for the lack of a valid PCR test or vaccination certificate, Greek media report. The boat migrants were fined during their asylum registration, but they were unable to read the papers because they were drafted in Greek. Local police initially said to use the same corona rules that also apply to tourists and businessmen. A senior police officer has annulled the fines after the necessary commotion in the country.
According to human rights organizations, Greece is trying to discourage migrants from getting on the boat and entering the country by handing out its towering fines. The Greek newspaper Efsyn speaks of a “scandalous trick” by the authorities.
For years, the South European country has been facing the influx of thousands of migrants and subsequent reception camps with North Africans in particular. There is also feared in Greece for a new wave of refugees from Afghanistan.
