During the Second World War, the royal family had fled the Netherlands and it was forbidden to celebrate Queen’s Day. 75 years ago the Netherlands was liberated and it was finally possible to celebrate again.
It was King Wilhelmina’s birthday on 31 August, which is why Queen’s Day fell on that day as well. The celebration in 1945 was bigger than before the war. According to a journalist at that time it was the first time you could notice that the war was really over.
