Several people were stabbed in and near a library in Lynn Vally, a luxury neighborhood in the north of the Canadian city of Vancouver. Six victims were taken to the hospital, said an emergency spokeswoman to news station CBC. According to the authorities, a woman has died and several injuries have occurred. Nothing has yet been published on the possible motive of the perpetrator who probably acted alone.
The defendant has been arrested. Police say he has a criminal record, but his identity hasn‘t been disclosed yet. TV channel CTV broadcast footage of the suspect’s arrest. It shows that he seems to stab himself in the leg before being overpowered by cops. A witness said on CTV that the unsub probably got into people at random.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Twitter that “his thoughts are near North Vancouver. All those affected by the violent incident in Lynn Valley know that all Canadians are thinking of you and wish the wounded a speedy recovery.”
