Ackermann strikes again in Tirreno-Adriatico

Pascal Ackermann also won the second stage in Tirreno-Adriatico. The German from Bora was again the fastest in the bunch sprint, this time in Follonica after 201 kilometers of racing. Fernando Gaviria came in second just like on Monday.

The Italians Marco Canola, Edoardo Zardini, Andrea Bagioli and Umberto Orsini formed the flight group of the day. Orsina capitulated the last of them, 16.5 kilometers from the finish.

After a day of loafing around (40 km/hour in a flat stage) Mathieu van der Poel took the lead of the peloton in the final stage and kept the pace high for his Alpecin teammate Tim Merlier. The Belgian champion started too early and finished fifth. Mike Teunissen was the best Dutch rider, finishing in tenth place.

Ackermann keeps blue

In the general classification Ackermann will of course remain the leader in the blue jersey. Gaviria is second at 8 seconds, Magnus Cort is number three at 16 seconds. Pascal Eenkhoorn is nineteenth, 20 seconds behind Ackermann.

The eight-day stage race Tirreno-Adriatico normally takes place in the spring, in the week before Milan-Sanremo. Among the participants of this edition during the Tour are Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas and Vicenzo Nibali.
