Ajax also wins fifth pouleduel: Haller next to Lewandowski after golden raid

Ajax has also won its fifth European pouleduel and therefore ends up at the top of a Champions League group for the first time since 1995. Substitute Sébastien Haller made the difference against Besiktas on Wednesday: thanks to his eighth and ninth (!) goal of the Champions League season, the Amsterdammers reversed a 1-0 backlog into a 1-2 win.
Trainer Erik ten Hag had thrown his lineup up beforehand. Partly due to the lack of Edson Álvarez and Antony, Perr Schuurs, Nicolás Tagliafico, Davy Klaassen, David Neres and Mohamed Daramy got a chance in the base. Andre Onana was also allowed to go ahead for the first time since 31 January. The closing post from Cameroon soon had to go to jail a few times, but collected 1-0 after 22 minutes. Noussair Mazraoui made hands, the VAR saw it and Rachid Ghezzal shot into the penalty awarded.

Ajax could not reach opportunities in the sequel of the first half and Onana had to intervene twice on a bet by Cyle Larin. Halfway through, however, Haller came in the lines for Daramy, after which everything became different at Ajax. The Ivorian international had its now traditional Champions League hit after ten minutes. Lisandro Martínez gave a fission pass on compatriot Tagliafico, who unlocked Haller for open purpose: 1-1.

Twenty minutes before time Ajax even pushed through and it got ahead. Dusan Tadic took a free-kick, Martínez and Haller were once again in the right spot: 1-2 and at the same level with Champions League top scorer Robert Lewandowski. Besiktas still had twenty minutes to do something about that backlog, but the Turkish champion no longer came close to an equalizer. Haller seemed to make even a third, but his late 1-3 was frowned upon for offside.

Ajax is due to the victory at fifteen points and can no longer be overtaken by Borussia Dortmund and Sporting Portugal, who will meet later on Wednesday. Sporting will be coming to Amsterdam on 7 December, to conclude the poule phase.
