After a tumultuous week Ajax has placed itself Wednesday evening for the semi-final of the KNVB-cup. The Amsterdammers beat PSV in the Johan Cruijff ArenA with 2-1
Ajax had to do it without a goalkeeper André Onaa, who has a 12-month doping suspension on his pants. Maarten Stekelenburg, 38 years now, was his replacement and only had to bow to his own goal.
Within 25 minutes, Ajax got a 2-0 head start thanks to two hits by Sebastién Haller who was accidentally not enrolled in the Europa League by Ajax. Eye to face with PSV goalie Lars Unnerstall, who had preferred Yvon Mvogo, the Amsterdam record purchase remained cold-blooded in the 19th minute and signed for the opening hit. A few minutes later, Haller was able to easily join a Dusan Tadic series. PSV had a chance for rest, but Stekelenburg saw Donyell Malens ball go next.
Own goal Ajax
After almost an hour of play, the tension in the match came back completely after a goal of Jurriën Timber. The young defender of Ajax tried to get rid of a front of Denzel Dumfries, but pushed the ball behind Stekelenburg: 2-1.
Ajax got harder and played less dynamic than for rest. The duel became more exciting and engaging without PSV getting really big chances for the much-needed equalizer.
With 20 minutes left on the clock, David Neres could have finally decided the duel, but his shot went rakelly along the PSV pole. Also Daley Blind got a good chance at the 3-1 with a few minutes left to play, but Unnerstall brought rescue. Davy Klaassen prevented Denzel Dumfries from enforcing an extension for PSV.
It was for the second time in exactly a month that Ajax and PSV fought each other. On January 10, Ajax and PSV played in the Eredivisie (2-2).
The cup loss means another defeat for PSV in a top match in their home country. The team of trainer Roger Schmidt managed to reach a point against Ajax until now. Both Feyenoord, AZ and Vitesse were lost in the competition.
Earlier, Vitesse placed himself in front of the semi-final of the KNVB Cup. The other quarter-finals between sc Heerenveen – Feyenoord and NEC – VVV-Venlo have yet to be played.
