Almost back to top at US Open; Osaka shivering further on

Naomi Osaka is still undefeated since the restart of women’s tennis. The Japanese number four of the placing list qualified for the fourth round at the US Open with a 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2 victory over 18-year-old Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, but this was not entirely self-evident

Osaka lost her self-confidence when she failed to make it 3-1 in the second set. After that, mistakes and frustrations piled up; her racket went to the ground several times. The rest for the tennis star only returned after a long game of 2-2 in the third set.

Many world top players are not present in New York (a.o. Ashleigh Barty, Simona Halep and Kiki Bertens) and of the favourites present Karolína Plísková, Garbine Muguruza and Johanna Konta were already eliminated.

Because Serena Williams and Australian Open-winner Sofia Kenin are in the other half of the game, Osaka has a place in the finals. At the Western & Southern Open the Japanese already reached the finals last week, but she was unable to play because of hamstring problems.

Kerber back in fourth round after four years

Possibly Osaka crossed swords with Angelique Kerber in the semi-finals. For the first time since her title in 2016, the German is back in the fourth round. She defeated the American Ann Li 6-3, 6-4.

Besides Osaka and Kerber also the American Jennifer Brady, the Kazakh Joelia Poetintseva and the Croatian Petra Martic reached the last sixteen in New York.
