The Ambassador of Italy to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Luca Attanasio, died on Monday in an armed attack on his convoy. This is what Italian and international media are written, including the Ansa news agency and the BBC.
Attanasio died in the hospital. Also a bodyguard and possibly even several police officers would have died.
The exact circumstances are still unknown. According to the first reports, it appears to be a failed kidnapping. Attanasio was said to have traveled in a convoy of the United Nations.
The fatal incident would have occurred in or near the Virunga National Park, a UNESCO-protected nature reserve in the east of the country, against the border with Uganda and Rwanda.
The area bordering Uganda and Rwanda is one of the most unrest in Africa. Criminal gangs, muting soldiers, ethnic militias and guerrilla groups have been active since 1998, often driven by the regime in Rwanda. The battles include the many minerals in which the area is rich. For example, the ore coltan, gold and diamond are extracted.
