Also this year Rafael Nadal will not win the ATP Finals. The Spaniard was defeated in London at the unofficial World Cup for the best eight players of the year in the semi-finals by Russian Daniil Medvedev: 6-3, 6-7 (4), 3-6.
In his career, Nadal won all the grandslam tournaments, the Olympic Games and most of the master tournaments. Only the ATP Finals and the master tournaments of Paris, Miami and Shanghai are missing from his list of honorary titles.
Nadal was twice in the finals in 2010 and 2013, losing to Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic also stranded in the semifinals this time. He just came short of Dominic Thiem, who will decide with Medvedev on Sunday who can call himself winner of the Finals for the first time.
Nadal seemed to have defeated Medvedev when in the second set he turned a 4-1 backlog into a 5-4 lead and could serve for the set. However, the Russian broke back, thrive to 4-1 in the tiebreak and won it with 7-4.
Medvedev saves more winners
Just like Thiem and Djokovic, Nadal and Medvedev were also in the third set for a long time: until 3-3 the set went on service. In the seventh game, Nadal worked away two breakpoints, but the third killed him.
The Spanish pipe turned out to be empty, and at 3-5 Nadal once again returned his service. Medvedevs victory was deserved: he won his storage games easier, got more breakpoints and hit more winners.
