Annemiek van Vleuten already seized power in the second stage of the Giro Rosa. The 37-year-old world champion isolated himself from the stage win and also took the lead in the general classification. The second stage covered 124.8 kilometres between Civitella Paganico and Arcidosso, along part of the Strade Bianche route.
At the beginning of August, Van Vleuten was the strongest in that Italian one-day race on partly unpaved roads and she was also in a class of her own on Saturday on the terrain she knows. In the final she rode away from her competitors on a climb and isolated to the win. Anna van der Breggen crossed the finish line in second place more than a minute later.
Van Vleutens Giro Rosa, the Tour of Italy for women, has been to her name for the past two years. Van der Breggen was the best in 2015 and 2017. The Giro Rosa has nine stages and ends next Saturday in Motta Montecorvino.
