Arantxa Rus did not manage to get through the first round of the US Open. The Dutch tennis star lost in New York in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 1-6) to American Ann Li, who is sixty spots lower than Russian on the world rankings.
For empty stands on track twelve of the hermetically sealed Flushing Meadows Rus came in the first set by a false start quickly 4-1 behind. The number 68 of the world recovered somewhat, came back to 4-4, but still lost the set 6-4.
The second set started Russian significantly better: within fifteen minutes she was 3-0 ahead and in the remainder she didn’t get into trouble.
But in the third set, things went wrong. Rus hit balls unnecessarily against the net at decisive moments; in the match of almost two hours, Rus made 37 unnecessary mistakes. The 20-year-old American took full advantage of that.
Rus did not get any further this year than the first round at the US Open. Only in 2011, the 29-year-old Dutchman managed to get through to the second round in New York.
