Arantxa Rus has reached the second round of the WTA tournament in Rome. The 29-year-old Dutch was too strong in two sets for the ten-year younger Polish Iga Swiatek: 7-6 (5) 6-3. The match lasted 2 hours and 12 minutes.
It was the first meeting between Russian and Swiatek, the numbers 71 and 52 of the world respectively. Russia reached the main tournament by winning two qualifiers. In the second round of the main schedule she took on Marketa Vondrousova. The Czech number 19 of the world defeated the Japanese Misaki Doi.
Rus made it to the second round last month as qualifier at the WTA tournament of Cincinnati, where she narrowly defeated Serena Williams. At the US Open she was immediately eliminated.
Kiki Bertens makes her comeback on the gravel in Rome. The number 8 of the world hasnt played a match since the end of February, when she was active in Qatar. The eight highest ranked players, including Bertens, have a bye in the opening round. In the second round, the 28-year-old Dutch, who was placed fifth, takes on Polona Hercog or Kaja Juvan. Both players are from Slovenia.
