Matthijs de Ligt will play with Giorgio Chiellini again next season, but seems to say goodbye to another competitor. Merih Demiral is on its way to Atalanta Bergamo, according to both the Italian and German branches of Sky Sports.
Cristian Romero, voted best defender of Serie A last season, will trade La Dea for Tottenham Hotspur and Demiral has to succeed the Argentine in Bergamo. According to Sky Sports, the numbers three and four of the previous Serie A year are close to a chord. Demiral is likely to be rented, including 35 million euro purchase option. Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen were also lurking, but never became concrete, are the sounds from Germany.
Merih Demiral is very close to a move to Atalanta! It will probably be a loan plus obligation to buy, final talks about the fee (around 35m€) ongoing.Dortmund and Leverkusen were interested, but never made an offer #TransferUpdate pic.twitter.com/WS6JKVXBMW

Demiral was picked up at Sassuolo in 2019 and entered Turin at the same time as De Lig. The 23-year-old Turk initially impressed, but fell far back after a severe knee injury. During the last European Championship, he created a painful scoop: he made the first goal of the tournament with his own goal, as the first ever EK player ever.
Earlier on Monday, it was announced that Juventus continues with Chiellini, who was transfer free since 1 July. The nearly 37-year-old routinier has been playing since 2005 (!) in Turin and stays inboard until 2023.
