AZ has taken a big step towards the group phase of the Conference League. The Alkmaarders were too strong on their own field with 4-0 for Gil Vicente after a whirlwind final phase.
AZ took the initiative from the first whistle, but it was difficult to find a hole in Gil Vicentes defense. Tijjani Reijnders put Myron van Brederode alone in front of the goalkeeper, but the young attacker was sidelined. Many more chances AZ did not play together in the first twenty minutes, but the first serious chance was immediately hit. A great cross by Milos Kerkez was nicely headed in by Dani de Wit.
After that, the Alkmaarders were not pure enough to expand the score, but also had little to worry about the visitors. That game scene did not change at first after the break. Tastemaker Tijjani Reijnders showed up for the goalkeeper after a combination with De Wit, but his low stakes were parried. It was a sign for AZ to turn it on again. Pavlidis was very close, but he did not turn AZs good work into a goal.
Not much later, the liberating 2-0 followed. A cross by Hakon Evjen was shot at his own pole by a defender of Gil Vicente, after which substitute Mayckel Lahdo was there as the chickens. After that, it suddenly went fast. Pavlidis hit goal with a placed shot and Mees de Wit made it 4-0. As a result, AZ is very close to the group phase. This is also very important in view of the coefficients struggle with Portugal.
