Viktoria Azarenka and Serena Williams easily reached the third round of the US Open. Azarenka won in two sets of Aryna Sabalenka, who was placed fifth in New York: 6-1, 6-3. Williams defeated Margarita Gasparjan 6-2, 6-4.
The Belarusian Sabalenka had no chance against her compatriot. Azarenka grabbed the title at the Australian Open in 2012 and 2013, made it to the finals of the US Open in those years and was then also the number one in the world.
At the end of 2016 she became a mother and partly due to a protracted custody case, results on the tennis court were long overdue. Last week she won her first title in four years and also against Sabalenka she showed to be in top form.
“I let her fight for every point and got everything back”, Azarenka shone. In the third round she bumped into the winner of the match between Sachia Vickery and Iga Swiatek.
Williams simple round further
Serena Williams, who was placed number three at the US Open, wasn’t surprised. The 23-time winner of a grand slam tournament finished 6-2, 6-4 with Margarita Gasparjan.
The 38-year old American tennis star waltzed over the Russin in the first set and came 2-0 in the second. Gasparjan then started to play more attacking and Williams had a hard time with that.
The Russin came back to 4-4, after which Williams survived a breaking chance in a sixteen-point game and then struck mercilessly.
The six-time US Open winner now stumbles upon Sloane Stephens. The tournament winner of 2017 was Olga Govortsova easily in control with 6-2, 6-2.
