Barcelona achieves final battle on turbulent evening for protagonist De Jong

FC Barcelona has placed itself on Wednesday evening at the expense of Real Sociedad for the final of the Supercopa. In the penalty series, Ronald Koeman‘s team pulled the longest end, despite a missed penalty from Frenkie de Jong. Marc-André ter Segen was the hero of the evening.

Barça has been running better in recent weeks and hoped to continue the upward line Wednesday evening against Real Sociedad, Spain’s number five. This had to be done on neutral ground: Estadio Nuevo Arcángel in Córdoba was the backdrop of the semi-final of the Supercopa.
Real Sociedad got the first big chance of the game. Alexander Isak tested the fists of Marc-André ter Segen, who got value for money a little later: Frenkie de Jong, who had once again been given an offensive role by Koeman, headed an acrobatically by Antoine Griezmann.

Even before rest, the equalizer fell – and also De Jong was involved in this. The Orange-International made unfortunate hands in its own penalty area after which Mikel Oyarzabal made no mistake: 1-1.

Thanks to the outstanding Ter Segen, Barcelona remained on its feet in the second half and also in the subsequent extension the German goalkeeper was important. Sociedad, in turn, had bad luck hitting the pole in the dying seconds.
In Barcelona‘s first series of penalties since 1998 (!) Ter Segen once again grew into the hero. He stopped the penalty kicks of Jon Bautista and Oyarzabal, while Willian José hit the pole, saving De Jong and Griezmann, who missed the first and fourth Barça penalty. Riqui Puig forced the decision.
The other finalist will be announced on Thursday night: Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid meet in the other semi-finals.
