Barcelona finds Mexican opponent after sudden withdrawal of AS Roma

FC Barcelona will compete in the Joan Gamper Trophy against Mexican Club Universidad Nacional, also known as Pumas. The Catalan club was originally scheduled to compete against AS Roma, but the Conference League winner recently withdrew.
Barcelona reports this on the club website. Originally, the Catalan club was scheduled to compete against Roma, but the Italian club withdrew from the tournament at the end of June. Barรงa was blazing and considered taking legal action, but now an opponent has been found for the annual game. Barcelona and Pumas meet on August 7.
For the second time in history, the Barรงa womens team also plays for their own version of the trophy. โ€œDue to the busy schedules of both teams, it was impossible to play on the same day,โ€ says Barcelona. The womens team will play against Montpellier on 23 August.
Barcelona also spoke briefly about Roma in the statement. โ€œThe withdrawal of AS Roma meant that both teams (the men and women, ed.) had to look for a new opponent at the last minute. Partly for this reason, both teams will play on different dates, concludes the club.
