Barcelona won the battle for the Joan Gamper Trophy in-house on Sunday. Coach Xavi‘s team beat UNAM Pumas 6-0 during the traditional season opening.
At Barcelona, there was room for the new acquisitions Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski in the base eleven. Other summer purchases like Jules Koundé and Franck Kessie started on the couch. Memphis Depay entered the line for Lewandowski after sixty minutes. Frenkie de Jong also started on the bench and was allowed to fill in after the break, in addition, the Dutchman made a goal in the final phase. The Joan Gamper Trofeu is traditionally the start of the season for Barcelona in its own stadium. This year’s edition was supposed to be played against AS Roma first, but the Italians canceled before the game.
Barcelona shot out of the starting blocks on Sunday evening. After twenty minutes of play, it was already 4-0 for the Catalans. After three minutes, it was Lewandowski who scored his first goal at Spotify Camp Nou. Two minutes later, Pedri brought the margin to two. Ousmane Dembélé made the 3-0 five minutes later and Pedri was allowed to dock for the fourth goal in the nineteenth minute.
After resting, Barcelona took some gas back. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made the 5-0 in the 49th minute and also took his goal. In the final phase, it was De Jong who scored the final goal. The Dutchman shot after a good dribble and thus set the final score at 6-0. Barcelona supporters sang to De Jong loudly after his goal.
Barcelona will start the competition on Saturday evening, August 13 with a home game against Rayo Vallecano. Whether Depay will be there is still unclear. He is nominated to leave Barcelona.
