FC Barcelona dropped stitches for the first time during its practice campaign. Austrian Red Bull Salzburg turned out to be too strong for Ronald Koeman, Sergiño Dest, Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay‘s team 2-1.
Barcelona still has to put it without Lionel Messi. Memphis started from the left side and threatened, but — after his hits against Girona and VfB Stuttgart — did not score this time. Ronald Araújo also came near the opening strike, but his header went just off.
The biggest chance was for Salzburg though: after Jordi Alba’s loss of ball, Noah Okafor had a virtually abandoned goal in front of him, but the rush hour was over. At a moment of rest, Luka Sucic managed to put his club ahead, from a much more difficult situation. The midfielder put on a long distance and befled goalkeeper Neto with his stripe: 1-0.
The second half was mainly about switches over and over again, but in the final phase it was still scored: Martin Braithwaite was in just the right place to touch a cracked shot by Dest and made the 1-1 with good luck, but Salzburg had the last word just before time: Brenden Aaronson made the winning 2-1.
Barça will practice one more time before the real work starts. Juventus is the opponent in the annual battle for the Troféu Joan Gamper on Sunday. One week later, Real Sociedad comes to Camp Nou for the first round of the Primera Division season.
