Basic student scholarship temporarily higher from September 2023 due to inflation

The basic grant for students living away from secondary and higher education will increase next academic year to compensate them for the high inflation. Thats what the government parties have decided.

For the 2023/2024 academic year, 165 euros per month will be added, in addition to the 250 to 300 euros per month that the scholarship would amount according to previous cabinet plans. The measure involves half a billion euros.

The increase in scholarships will be officially announced on Prinsjesdag, next Tuesday, according to The Hague sources. It is part of the purchasing power measures that the cabinet is preparing for next year.

Purchasing power repair

VVD, D66, CDA and CU assume that students with a (additional) job also benefit from the proposed increase in the minimum wage by 10 percent. In addition, the increase in the care allowance also applies to students.

The grant for students who live with their parents will not be temporarily increased. The coalition parties believe that the parents receive sufficient purchasing power repair thanks to other measures.

The increase will only take effect in September 2023 because the new scholarship system will be introduced at the beginning of the academic year. The measure applies for one year because the cabinet hopes that inflation will also fall again in the long run.

Loan System

At the moment, the loan system still applies. This will therefore be replaced next academic year by the basic grant as it existed before 2015, and since then, politicians have come to the conclusion that the loan system does not work properly, partly because it burdens many students with sky-high debts.

Just this morning, the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) announced that the student debt of (former) students with the government will continue to grow.

Since the introduction of the loan system in 2015, the average student debt has increased by 3500 euros per (former) student to almost 16,000 euros. The total student debt of all (former) students amounts to 25.7 billion euros.
