Beaches Israel polluted by large oil spill

A giant oil spill has smeared several beaches in Israel. Thousands of volunteers gathered on the beaches on Sunday to clean up oil residues. Israel is trying to find the ship responsible for the pollution. The removal of the sticky tar residues will take months and perhaps years, according to officials.

The army announced the use of thousands of soldiers to assist in the cleanup operation. Environmental groups spoke of disaster as they showed images of tar-covered turtles.

It is possible that a ship that passed on February 11 is the cause of the pollution. Minister Gila Gamliel of Environmental Protection said that nine ships are being looked at in the vicinity. She thinks there‘s a good chance that the responsible ship will be found. The damage could then be recovered from the owner or his insurer.
