Belgian racing pigeon auctioned for record amount of 1.6 million euros

A Belgian carrier pigeon has been auctioned for 1.6 million euros. She was bought by a Chinese pigeon fancier. Never before has there been so much money paid for a carrier pigeon.

Prior to the online auction in Knesselare, Belgium, โ‚ฌ1.32 million was already offered, but that amount has increased further.

The pigeon is called โ€œNew Kim, โ€œa female. And that makes it special, because normally males are more expensive.

There was a lot of interest in the pigeon from China. Chinese bet on the animals in pigeon races, as is also the case in equestrian sport. They then bid on the pigeon that they expect to be the fastest back in the loft.

โ€œ China is really the racing pigeon country on the rise. Millions of people participate in the racing pigeon sport thereโ€, said Vincent Hoogerwerf of Hoogerwerf Racing Pigeons to DeccEit.

hiding

The pigeon had to go into hiding in the run-up to the auction. โ€œHappiness and grief lies in pigeon racing close together. They accommodated him because they fear that the pigeon will be stolen,โ€ says Hoogerwerf.

What makes New Kim so special is that she has a good sense of direction but according to experts is also a top pigeon to breed with. The offspring is also expected to earn a lot of money in the future.

And exactly for that purpose the pigeon was bought. Because connoisseur Vincent Hoogerwerf doesn‘t think New Kim will ever fly another meter. โ€œThis pigeon is from Gaston van de Wouwer, really a top lover in Belgium. He sells it. If you let go of the pigeon, it will fly back to Belgium. And of course they don’t want that in China.โ€
