Belgium recommends mouthcaps in the office, even when calling

It is advisable to wear a mouthcap in the office, even during phone calls and conversations with colleagues, even more than one and a half meters away. According to the advisory group of the Belgian health authorities, fabric caps and disposable masks are the best choice. Scarves or caps with a valve are no longer allowed in places where wearing a cap is mandatory in Belgium, such as public transport, shops and secondary schools.

According to virologist Steven Van Gucht, most saliva droplets are emitted while talking, and mouthcaps prove their usefulness against possible contamination. He explained the new opinion of the so-called Risk Assessment Group (RAG) during a press conference on the state of affairs in Belgium. FFP2 masks are not recommended because they are expensive, can not be reused and are uncomfortable.

In Belgium, working from home is mandatory unless it is otherwise possible. That is also checked, but still too many people go to the office. Van Gucht pointed out that colleagues often infect each other during a coffee break or lunch. โ€œPeople want to escape the mask with coffee or a cigarette. They chat and infect each other,โ€ he said. The virologist insists on pausing only and preferably outdoors.

According to Van Gucht, Belgium is currently on a โ€œplateauโ€ when it comes to the spread of the coronavirus. The number of new infections continues to increase gradually, while the number of hospitalizations falls slightly, as well as the number of deaths.
