Bertens starts with bye in Rome

On her return to the WTA tournament in Rome, Kiki Bertens was placed fifth. The number 7 of the world hasn‘t played a single match since the end of February, when she was active in Qatar.

The eight highest placed players have a bye in the opening round. In the second round, Bertens (28) takes on the Slovenian Polona Hercog or a qualifier. That could be Arantxa Rus, as she won her first qualifier on Saturday. With 6-1 6-3 she defeated the Russin Liudmila Samsonova.

Simona Halep was placed first at the Italian gravel tournament, where Bertens reached the semi-finals last year. She then lost in three sets to Johanna Konta.

Koolhof against Rojer

In the men’s doubles, Wesley Koolhof, together with the Croat Nikola Mektic, was paired with Jean-Julien Rojer and the Romanian Horia Tecau in the opening round. Koolhof lost the final of the US Open on Thursday.

Success De Groot at US Open

Wheelchair tennis player Diede de Groot has won the title at the US Open for the third time in a row. The first seeded De Groot was the Japanese Yui Kamiji in the finals 6-3 6-3. Also in 2018 and 2019, 23-year-old De Groot took the final victory in New York at the expense of her Asian rival. Last year, the world‘s number 1 needed three sets against the world’s number 2.

Early this year, De Groot lost surprisingly in the first round at the Australian Open. Kamiji took full advantage of this and won the tournament. Together with Marjolein Buis, De Groot is also in the finals of the doubles.
