US President Joe Biden is making another 500 million corona vaccines available to countries struggling to tackle the corona crisis. All vaccines, including previous commitments, must be delivered by September 2022. The United States pays pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and BioNTech a total of 3.5 billion dollars (almost 3 billion euros) for the vaccines.
“This is a crisis that affects all hands on deck,” Biden said at a virtual summit on Covid-19 on Wednesday, “We can only beat the pandemic if we do it everywhere.” A day earlier it was announced that Biden would make the commitment.
Bidens commitment brings the total number of vaccines provided by the US to other countries at more than 1 billion doses. The vaccines are mainly provided to poorer countries, including African Union member states.
Biden called on other countries to work on increasing the production of corona vaccines and other measures to contain the corona pandemic. He said that the corona crisis is a tragedy that affects the whole world and that it is not resolved by half-hearted measures.
