US President Joe Biden is going to meet his Chinese colleague Xi Jinping for the first time, but per video connection. Representatives of the United States and China reached an agreement in principle during consultations in Zurich, Switzerland. The virtual meeting will take place before the end of the year.
The two leaders had only had two phone contact so far. Biden spoke to Xi a few years ago, when he was not president of the United States.
The announcement comes at a time when tensions between Washington and the communist regime in Beijing, the two largest economies in the world, have been rising high. In Zurich, top envoys from both countries spoke for hours in an effort to bridge the huge differences and at least keep communication going.
According to a US government official, the conversation was more meaningful and substantive than previous contacts in recent times.
