One year after David Alabas departure, Bayern Munich is still looking for an Abwehrchef and has set his eye on Matthijs de Ligt. BILD has asked a number of connoisseurs about their verdict: Huub Stevens is happy, Frank Verlaat has a blow around the arm.
Stevens believes that De Ligt has learned a lot from a defensive point of view since he left for Juventus in 2019. “But he is used to defending ahead, he could do that at Ajax like no other. He is a football defender and he would be a perfect fit for Bayerns style of play.” Transfer amounts of seventy to one hundred million euros are circulating in the international media. “Thats Wahnsinn, of course,” says Stevens. “But in England, that kind of money for defenders is normal.”
Verlaat — single Orange-international and former defender of Ajax, VfB Stuttgart and Werder Bremen — points out to the Germans that De Ligt is currently not a fixture in the Dutch team. “At Ajax he was good, but then he also played in a smooth running team,” he says. “The fact that he has qualities is beyond question. Im just wondering if hes just as much of a leader on the field as Virgil van Dijk, for example.”
In addition to Bayern Munich, Chelsea has a serious interest in De Ligt. In addition, Juventus hopes to renew its ongoing contract until 2024.
