Microsoft founder Bill Gates (65) and his wife Melinda (56) are getting divorced. On Twitter, the couple writes in a joint statement that โ€œafter a long time of thought and a lot of work on our relationshipโ€ they decided to put an end to marriage.

According to Bloomberg news agency, Gates is worth $146 billion (โ‚ฌ121 billion), making him ranked fourth among wealthiest people in the world.

He and his wife founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 1999. In recent decades, this foundation has become one of the largest charitable organizations in the world, with a capital of 51 billion dollars (converted 42 billion euros).

In the statement, the couple writes that โ€œlast 27 years we have raised three great children and set up a foundation that operates all over the worldโ€. They continue to work together within the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Gates left Microsofts board last year to spend more time on its foundation. Last year, the foundation aligned tens of millions to combat the coronavirus. In the notice about the divorce, the couple emphasizes that they continue to work together in the foundation.

In 1975, Gates founded Microsoft together with his childhood friend Paul Allen, who died in 2018. In the following decades, it became the largest software company in the world. In 2008, the billionaire laid down the day-to-day management of the company. Gates remained Chairman of the Board of Directors until 2014, a supervisory role.
