Bizarre Copa Escape: 3-5 for Barcelona

FC Barcelona miraculously escaped premature shutdown in the Copa del Rey. Ronald Koemans team was behind 2-0 in minute 88, managed to enforce an extension and finally won 3-5: Frenkie de Jong took his goaltje for the fifth time in 2021, but Antoine Griezmann was the eye-catcher with two goals and two assists at Jordi Alba.

The 27-year-old Frenchman was again preferred to compatriot Clément Lenglet at the number eight of the competition. Barcelona opened furiously in Nuevo Estadio de Los Cármenes and received two dots of chances in the opening hit within seven minutes. Goalkeeper Aarón Escandell, however, held off Ronald Araújo, Lionel Messi and Francisco Trincão with great saves.
It turned out how important they were after more than half an hour of play. Umtiti lasted too long and was pressured at the rear line by two opponents: Alberto Soro gave for and Kenedy was able to enter the 1-0 at close range. Barcelona had to get rid of the fright, started full of good courage on the second half, but almost immediately after rest also got the 2-0 around the ears. Umtiti misvalued a depth pass by Ángel Motoro and his 35-year-old opponent Roberto Soldado had free passage: 2-0.

In the final phase, Barcelona made every effort to get an extension out of the fire, but goalkeeper Escandell grew in the match: a stroke by Griezmann, which he tapped over the bar, was the culmination of his match. The closing post was also rescued twice by the bar, which stopped the deployment of Trincão and Ousmane Dembélé. Two minutes before time, Escandell still had to pass. Griezmann tried it from a seemingly impossible angle, but the ball still entered through the short angle: 2-1.
Granada continued to defend its head start with hand and tooth and crawled through the eye of the needle in the ninety minute. Messi tried it from the second line, but hit the pole, after which Martin Braithwaite went over the head in the afterbutt. In the extra time, however, it still succeeds: Messi set up the attack, Griezmann headed ahead and Alba worked with his nose in the 2-2.

An extension proved necessary, partly because Luis Suárez missed a golden opportunity for Granada. Both shifts continued happily in the extra half hour. In minute 100 the roles were reversed: Alba was the declarant this time and Griezmann headed the 2-3. The Catalan comeback was complete, but three minutes later Granada received another penalty: 3-3 via Fede Vico.
However, Barça again showed resilience and decided the duel in the second quarter. De Jong was in the right place after a half-saved shot by Messi: 3-4. Not long after that it was Griezmann and Alba who found each other: the Frenchman saw the space on the left, after which Alba took care of the 3-5 with a scorching volley. Barça can now compete with Seville, Levante and the winner of Real Betis-Athletic Bilbao for the final victory.
