For our popular section ‘Beautiful at any age’ we put women over 30s in the spotlight. Because we like all women: regardless of weight, size and/or ‘beauty flaw (s) ‘. What is your beauty secret and what are you going to shine? And what keeps you young? This week Halima Maaroufi (48). She is a widow, has a son (19) and owns a bookstore.
Do you feel as young/old as you are?
“ Yes, I feel as old as I am.”
Do you have a beauty secret?
“ Take good care of yourself, in whatever form. Every six weeks I have a peeling done, that makes my skin shine beautifully again. I started the peelings after I got pigmented spots two years ago from the stress. My husband died in 2019 after a short illness from the consequences of cancer.
Suddenly I was alone with our son (now 19 years old) and the bookstore he left. I didn‘t have a lot of time to think about his death, because I had to keep the business going in the meantime. Before my husband got sick, I had never suffered from pigment spots. It’s bizarre to see what stress can do to a body.”
Do people estimate you at the right age?
“ No, I‘m always estimated younger. Probably because of my young looking skin; I don’t smoke and drink. In addition, I am slightly tinted, my mother is Dutch with some Indonesian blood somewhere and my father is Moroccan.”
What do you like most about yourself?
“ My almond-shaped, brown eyes. They look even more beautiful when I‘ve done my eyebrows.”
What are you less happy with?
“ With the varicose veins on my legs. That keeps me from walking with shorter skirts in the summer. I’d rather wear a maxi skirt. In the hospital, they treated my varicose veins several times, but never with long-term success. I sometimes wear compression stockings to prevent the fatigue of my legs, although it is still quite difficult to put them on myself.”
What do people compliment you on?
“ My immediacy is appreciated by my environment. Furthermore, I get compliments on my good skin and curls.”
Are you where you wanted to be?
“ No, not yet, but that‘s because of the circumstances. I’d love to be paid, but you don‘t just give up a business of your own. It takes a lot of work and patience. I still dream of going abroad for good someday, to a sunny place.”
What keeps you young?
“ That I take good care of myself and by enjoying the little things in life. I’ve noticed that when I‘m positive, life is a lot more fun. Despite the hard time I’ve had, I try not to sit down in the suits. I firmly believe that things happen for a reason.”
Do you have a life lesson?
“ You can still have so many people around you, but in the end you have to get it from yourself. No one feels what you feel and that‘s why it’s important to always listen carefully to your own feelings. Be kind to yourself and keep taking care of yourself, no matter what.”
