In central Antwerp, two children died in a truck accident on Tuesday morning. That‘s what the local police say. It’s about a 9-year-old girl and her 1.5-year-old brother. The crash occurred at the intersection of the Lange Leemstraat with Sint-Vincentiusstraat. The circumstances of the accident are still under investigation.
The accident occurred around 9.15 am in the Lange Leemstraat, near Sint-Vincentiusstraat. “The two victims, a 1.5-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl, would have moved on a non-electric scooter,” says a spokesperson for the Antwerp police. It concerns two children from a family from the Jewish community.
The conditions are investigated and a traffic expert will be on site. An initial investigation would show that the truck came from Sint-Vincentiusstraat and turned left into Lange Leemstraat. At the same time, the children crossed the Lange Leemstraat to the pedestrian crossing. Several witnesses saw the accident happen. “Like the family, they are obviously given victim care,” said the police spokesman. The truck driver was taken to the hospital in shock. He will be questioned about the circumstances later.
