Brother and sister (1 and 9) on step killed in truck accident in Antwerp city centre

In central Antwerp, two children died in a truck accident on Tuesday morning. That‘s what the local police say. It’s about a 9-year-old girl and her 1.5-year-old brother. The crash occurred at the intersection of the Lange Leemstraat with Sint-Vincentiusstraat. The circumstances of the accident are still under investigation.

The accident occurred around 9.15 am in the Lange Leemstraat, near Sint-Vincentiusstraat. โ€œThe two victims, a 1.5-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl, would have moved on a non-electric scooter,โ€ says a spokesperson for the Antwerp police. It concerns two children from a family from the Jewish community.

The conditions are investigated and a traffic expert will be on site. An initial investigation would show that the truck came from Sint-Vincentiusstraat and turned left into Lange Leemstraat. At the same time, the children crossed the Lange Leemstraat to the pedestrian crossing. Several witnesses saw the accident happen. โ€œLike the family, they are obviously given victim care,โ€ said the police spokesman. The truck driver was taken to the hospital in shock. He will be questioned about the circumstances later.
