Burmas government leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, was “arrested” by the armed forces, while her party denounced a “coup”.
The army arrested other government officials and members of the Aung San Suu Kyi party, the National League for Democracy (NLD).
These arrests come at a time when the Parliament from the last legislative elections was scheduled to begin its first session in a few hours.
Internet access was disrupted in the country.
For several weeks, the military had denounced fraud cases during the November legislatures, largely won by the NLD, in power since 2015.
The army proclaimed a state of emergency for a period of one year and appointed an interim president general.
