Carlos Sainz makes his debut as a Ferrari driver

Carlos Sainz drove his first rounds on Wednesday in a Ferrari Formula One car. The Spaniard, who came over from McLaren and took over the seat from Sebastian Vettel at the Italian racing stable, did so on Ferraris own circuit Foriano.

Ferrari was keen to give Sainz some extra test mileage because there are only three official test days this spring leading up to the first Grand Prix (March 28 in Bahrain). The Spaniard was only allowed to do so in a Formula One car older than two years, because the rules do not allow the drivers to drive the 2021 race car outside the regular test races in Barcelona.

Sainz (26) drove over a hundred laps on the nearly 3 km test circuit and after a long day he was very satisfied. โ€œThe day started at dawn because we had team discussions first. Further, it went very well. The moment I reached the circuit and saw the Ferrari with my number 55 on it was special. I wanted to jump right in.โ€

His teammate Charles Leclerc, recovered from infestation with corona, had ridden in the 2018 Ferrari on Tuesday as at Foriano, and he also drove his hundred laps.
