Certainly 27 dead in major fire in New Delhi office building

A major fire in an office building in the Indian capital New Delhi has killed at least 27 people. According to the local fire department, there have also been several injuries.

At least fifty people have been rescued from the three-story building. In the meantime, the fire in the building has been extinguished.

More than twenty fire trucks were used to control the fire:

West Bengal minister speaks on Twitter of a โ€œtragic incidentโ€. She says she is โ€œextremely shocked and saddened by the sudden news of the loss of a large number of livesโ€ and prays for a speedy recovery of the wounded.

Rescuers have searched the first two floors of the building and are now working on the third. The death toll may still increase.

Republic World footage shows how people are being rescued by the emergency services. Others use rope to get themselves to safety. It is not clear if and how many people are still stuck in the building.

The owner of the building was arrested by the police.
