Champions League wintering becomes challenge for Barça, Chelsea demolished Juventus

For FC Barcelona, wintering in the Champions League is anything but certain: the Catalans have played scorelessly against Benfica in-house. Hakim Ziyech‘s Chelsea made minced meat from Juventus on Stamford Bridge. With the other four Champions League duels, there was plenty too.
Barcelona – Benfica 0-0If Barcelona booked a victory over Benfica in-house, the next round Catalans were in the Champions League. The first half of the game was full of delights: seventeen-year-old Gavi shone with some great actions, Yusuf Demir also showed himself with a nice attempt and Benfica defender Nicolás Otamendi even produced a great goal. However, the Argentine’
s hit was frowned upon for offside.

This Otamendi world goal will not be on the scoreboard. The ball has already been behind. What a damper for Benfica! #UCL

As a result, the goggles stand was still on the scoreboard at rest. After the break, Barcelona sought the attack. The Catalans got good chances again, but failed to finish them. Ronald Araújo still made an offside goal. On the other hand, Benfica was no longer able to score either: the entertaining duel in Camp Nou ended in 0-0.
This means that Barcelona remains above Benfica in Group E of the Champions League. However, Xavi‘s team still has to go to jail for wintering: on the last day of play, Barça goes to visit Bayern, while Benfica plays Dinamo Kiev at home against number last. If the Portuguese win that match, Barcelona must do the same thing in Germany to continue.
Chelsea – Juventus 4-0At the game between Chelsea and Juventus Hakim Ziyech and Matthijs de Ligt were both at the base. The Blues quickly turned out to be the stronger team, which became visible on the scoreboard after 25 minutes: Trevoh Chalobah made the opening hit out of a corner.
After that, Juventus managed to hold for another half an hour, but ten minutes after rest it suddenly went hard. First, Reece James doubled the margin by hitting a losing ball. A few minutes later, Callum Hudson-Odoi also took care of the 3-0. Ziyech delivered the front assist in that hit, while De Ligt did not look strong defensively.

Chelsea leaves nothing very of Juventus 🤯 Very soon after the 2-0 Hudson-Odoi is there with the third for the home team 🥵 #ZiggoSport #UCL #CHEJUV

During the injury time, Timo Werner set the final result to 4-0, so Chelsea is now sure of wintering just like Juventus. The two superpowers now have the same number of points, but Chelsea is now first in the group on mutual results.
Sevilla – VfL Wolfsburg 2-0Sevilla had to win in-house in order to have another good chance of wintering in the Champions League. The Spanish finally succeeded, due to an early goal by Joan Jordán and a late goal by Rafa Mir. As a result, Seville is now third, while Wolfsburg descends to the last spot in Group G. The Germans can still overwinter.
Lille OSC – Red Bull Salzburg 2-0Just like in the previous Champions League round, Salzburg was able to assure itself of wintering. For that, however, the team had to win on a visit to Sven Botman’
s Lille. That didn‘t work: after a good action, Burak Yilmaz managed to reach Jonathan David in the 31st minute, after which the Canadian made the only goal of the match. Lille is therefore leading in Group G of the Champions League. Salzburg is now second, with one point more than number three Sevilla.
Young Boys – Atalanta 3-3The competition on the artificial turf in Switzerland was a true spectacle. At rest, both teams had already scored once. After the break, José Luis Palomino brought Atalanta ahead, by hitting the ball from outside the sixteen at once. The 1-2 position was maintained for a long time, but in the last ten minutes everything happened.
For example, Young Boys made two hits in four minutes, causing Atalanta to virtually drop to the last spot in Group F. In the 87th minute, however, Luis Muriel became the saving angel of Atalanta. The Colombian striker shot a free-kick against the ropes, making Atalanta go home with one point. The Italians are now third in their pool, with one point less than Villarreal.

What’s that all 😂 Luis Muriel claims the ball and with his first ball contact he shoots Atalanta at 3-3 👏 #ZiggoSport #UCL #YBATA

Malmö FF — Zenit Saint Petersburg 1-1Also the duel between Malmö and Zenit was decided late. The home team was long ahead of 1-0 after a hit by Søren Rieks, but in the last minute the three points slipped out of hands. In injury time, Jaroslav Rakitskiy put Zenit from thepenalty point again at the same level. As a result, Zenit is sure of a Europa League ticket. For Malmö, the European adventure is over after the winter break.
