Christoph Freund wont be Chelseas new technical director. His current club RB Salzburg announced this via an official statement. The Austrians name was mentioned many times in London, but according to his current club, hes not going anywhere.
“Christoph Freund is and remains our technical director,” the club says in the statement on Twitter. “The extensive speculation among the media and the public has led us to the following statement: Christoph is and remains technical director of RB Salzburg. There wont be a move to Chelsea in any way.”
Freund was in Chelseas interest for a long time, after Londoners were looking for a new technical director. Since the arrival of new owner Todd Boehly, the club has been looking for a new policyman. Previously, Chelsea also fired trainer Thomas Tuchel, but Graham Potter was soon appointed as his replacement.
The 45-year-old Freund has worked at RB Salzburg in various positions since 2006. Freund started as a team manager, then worked as a technical coordinator and has been responsible for the clubs technical policy since 2015. In his time, he made waves by bringing Erling Haaland, Dayot Upamecano and Sadio Mané to the Austrians, among others. Many of these star players also enforced a resale rate.
