Chinese bus driver ignores high water warning: thirteen dead

In China, at least thirteen people were killed when the bus they were in plunged into a river. The accident happened just outside the city of Shijiazhuang, 300 kilometres south of Beijing.

There has been a lot of rain in the area and rivers have stepped outside their shores. Road users were warned not to cross bridges, but the driver of the accident bus ignored that warning and drove up a bridge partially submerged. Then his bus hit off the road and collapsed into the river.

Nearly forty bus passengers survived the accident. Seven of them were taken to hospital injured. Another passenger is missing. The driver has been arrested.

At another location in the area, hard work is being done to repair damaged roads and build dikes:

The heavy rains and floods had already killed fifteen people in the affected area. About 120,000 people have been evacuated.

Many farmers are expected to face financial problems as more than 190,000 hectares of farmland have been destroyed.
