“ Facts speak louder than words, genocide in Xinjiang is an outright lie.” This is what the Chinese embassy in The Hague claims on Thursday in response to a motion adopted in which the House of Representatives states that China is committing genocide on the Uyghur Muslim minority.
“ With ignoring facts and common sense, the Xinjiang-related motion by the Dutch House of Representatives deliberately smeared China”, writes the embassy of the Communist superpower. With this, the MPs are “grossly interfering with Chinas internal affairs.”
China strongly condemns and strongly opposes this, as the declaration states. “In recent years, the Uyghur population in Xinjiang has grown steadily and their standard of living has improved significantly.” Furthermore, the embassy states that some parliamentarians use the issue for political gain. “This fully demonstrates their ignorance and bias towards China, as well as their selfishness and narrow-minded minds.”
The motion on the initiative of coalition parties D66 and ChristianUnion received the support of a large majority in the House of Representatives.
Among others CDA, SP, GroenLinks, PvdA, THINK and Party voor de Dieren support this statement.
The cabinet does not yet want to speak of genocide, said Minister Stef Blok (Foreign Affairs). According to him, a ruling by an international court or a UN ruling is needed. There are, however, large-scale human rights abuses against Uyghurs, living in the north-western region of Xinjiang.
According to international media, women are systematically raped and men are put into closed labour camps. China argues that these are innocent reeducation camps. Uyghurs in the Netherlands say they are unable to contact relatives or acquaintances who have been arrested.
