Confusion over quarantine duty for roommates: ‘Customization takes time’

Confusion has arisen about the tightened corona rules for roommates of people who have tested positive. Last Friday, the outgoing cabinet announced that all housemates should be quarantined, regardless of whether they are vaccinated or not. But online, the advice is still not adapted and the GGDs do not recommend unambiguously either. According to a spokesperson for the Ministry of Health Care, this is because not everything is โ€œpractically arrangedโ€ yet.

Until recently, housemates of infected corona patients were advised to go into quarantine only if they have complaints or are not protected against corona (in the form of a vaccination or an infection experienced). On Friday, it became known that this was being tightened, as part of a wide range of corona measures.

The package of measures was scheduled to take place on Saturday, the cabinet announced at the corona press conference. In the accompanying parliamentary letter, outgoing minister De Jonge, however, made a reservation for the quarantine advice for housemates: โ€œBecause this advice may have a number of practical consequences, it will be further elaborated by the RIVM.โ€

On Saturday, the Ministry added to the online news report about the new package that the quarantine measure would not enter into force until Monday, November 15. But now that the time has come, there is no clarity yet. For example, letters with instructions for infected persons and roommates have not yet been updated.

That includes the online quarantine check that people can do. If you fill out that a roommate has tested positive and that you have been vaccinated yourself, you get as a result that you dont have to quarantine. So that is contrary to the new quarantine rules.

Social media shows that people are confused about the rules. Also, calls to the GGD are not always a solace. Some GGDs recommend a home quarantine for roommates of infected people, others say the measure has not yet taken effect.

โ€œIt is true that everything has not yet been adjusted,โ€ says the spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Health Care. โ€œBut that just takes time. The RIVM must change its guidelines and that also applies to the GGDs.โ€

Umbrella organization GGD GHOR says in a response that the GGDs are waiting for those new RIVM guidelines. As soon as there are, all the recommendations of the GGD will also be adapted accordingly. โ€œBut it may be that employees are already ahead of the final entry into force,โ€ says a spokesperson. โ€œThat explains that some roommates are already told that they can stay at home better.โ€

As soon as possible

Although behind the scenes, everything has not been arranged yet, the Ministry of Health and Health Care stresses that people are best to adhere to the new policy now. So stay at home if you have a roommate who has tested positive. In the meantime, a new sentence has been posted above the home quarantine information page: โ€œThe information on this page will be updated as soon as possible after the press conference of 12 November 2021.โ€

The VWS spokesperson hopes that this will be arranged as soon as possible. Then it must also be clear how long the compulsory quarantine for roommates will last.
