Conservative and controversial radio maker Rush Limbaugh (70) died

American radio host Rush Limbaugh died at the age of 70. His wife Kathryn announced that at the beginning of the radio show Limbaugh made weekly. Limbaugh, who was popular in conservative circles, suffered from lung cancer for some time.

Limbaugh is seen as one of the most influential figures in the American media in recent decades. He has made his show The Rush Limbaugh Show since 1984, which has given him a loyal conservative backing. He always presented a gold microphone from behind.

He became popular, but also controversial with it. His fans called him โ€œAmerica‘s Anchorman,โ€ his opponents saw him as a charlatan and as the most dangerous man in the United States.

Limbaugh’s programme expanded slowly but steadily from California. In 1988 the show went nationwide, eventually with 600 channels. According to the programmers themselves, it is the most listened talk program in the United States, and 27 million people listen to it every week. Limbaugh preferred to talk about the news for three hours, without guests.

Limbaugh gained a wealth and became a significant factor in the Republican Party with his programme. Republican presidents George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush and Donald Trump came to the studio. Trump awarded Limbaugh last year with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest award given by the US government to citizens.

Limbaugh received Trump‘s award in February 2020:

With President Trump, Limbaugh had a good relationship. At the award ceremony, Trump thanked him for his โ€œdecades-long and tireless dedicationโ€ to the United States.

And when Trump recovered from a corona infection, Limbaugh made a special broadcast for the president. Trump himself was talking for two hours. โ€œWe love you,โ€ Limbaugh said to Trump on behalf of his listeners.

Sexist and homophobic

The influential Limbaugh was also controversial, especially in progressive circles in the United States. He was compromised because of racist, sexual and homophobic statements. He called former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton a โ€œFeminiZi, โ€œa term he used more often for feminists. He didn’t want to know anything about rights for the Ihbti community.

His show also regularly expressed a conspiracy theory. According to him, President Obama was not born in the United States. It also regularly dealt with climate change, which, despite a lot of scientific evidence, was not the result of human action. He also promoted fewer rules, lower taxes on the rich, and US military interventions in the Middle East.

He waved away accusations that the Russians had interfered in the US presidential election in 2016. According to him, the deep state was behind it, and more specifically: former employees of Obama who would still pull the strings at the intelligence organizations.

Two weeks ago, Limbaugh presented his program for the last time. Like President Trump, he didn‘t believe anything of Joe Biden’s election gain. According to him, the elections had not been fair. โ€œWe will not be docile as we were in the past, and wait for the next elections,โ€ he said.
