Corona also likes Bertens from US Open; she chooses Roland Garros

Kiki Bertens has decided not to participate in the US Open in three weeks time. A trip to New York would mean that she will not be able to appear on her beloved Roland Garros.

“After a long thought I decided not to go to America for the Cincinnati tournament and the US Open. The situation around covid-19 is still worrying. Health is paramount and control of this virus has priority,” she writes on her Instagram page.

“Our Prime Minister also said yesterday that we have to quarantine for two weeks after America. That would interfere with the preparation of my beloved gravel in Rome and Paris.”

Full calendar

On the calendar collapsed by corona, the US Open starts on 31 August. Roland Garros is already on the program two weeks later.

Gravel is Bertens’ favourite surface. Last year she won the prestigious tournament of Madrid and in 2016 she reached the last four at Roland Garros. At the US Open, which is played on hardcourt, she never made it past the third round.

Roger Federer isn’t there either because of knee surgery and Novak Djokovic – like many of his colleagues – still doubts whether he should travel to New York.
