If China does not change its attitude towards the Uyghurs, next year the Winter Olympics will have to be moved from China to another country. That is why D66 argues.
In the radio program News and Co, D66-MP Shuerdsma said that China is committing genocide on the Uighurs. He spoke of terrible abuses against the Uyghur Muslim minority: “We should not take a word and call it genocide.” GroenLinks and ChristianUnie, among others, agree with this qualification.
Possibly over a million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities are trapped in penal camps and detention centres in the Chinese region of Xinjiang. The matter will be discussed in the House of Representatives on Thursday and D66 hopes to obtain a majority in favour of its position.
Block: No Genocide
So far, Minister Blok doesn‘t want to accuse the Chinese of genocide. According to him, there are widespread violations of human rights, such as the imposition of birth restrictions. But he wrote to the Chamber last week that “in order to qualify as genocide it is necessary to establish that [it] was imposed with genocidal intent”.
The demissionary Minister of Foreign Affairs added that judgments of international courts, unambiguous conclusions from scientific research and findings by the UN are leading to the Cabinet. “There is no question of this at the moment,” he wrote to the Chamber.
The Canadian House of Commons described China’s treatment of the Uyghurs last night as genocide, and earlier the US government did so. D66 wants Blok to join.
