Daredevil Ackermann squeezes himself to sprint victory in Tirreno-Adriatico

German rider Pascal Ackermann won the first stage in the 55th edition of Tirreno-Adriatico. The rider from Bora had nerves of steel in the bunch sprint after 133 kilometers of the race and hit the finish line Fernando Gaviria.

In the stage with start and finish in Lido di Camaiore the last breakaway riders were caught at 20 kilometers from the finish. After a crash in the middle of the bunch, Emirates rider Gaviria was in the sprint and the Colombian seemed to be on his way to victory.

The fearless Ackermann was still in eighth place 150 meters from the finish, but slalomed nicely forward. He passed Magnus Cort on the inside, where there was almost no room, and just before the finish he struggled through an even smaller gap along Gaviria.

Dear Dutchman

Pascal Eenkhoorn (Jumbo-Visma) finished tenth in the bunch sprint. Tuesday’s stage will be mostly flat over 201 kilometers from Camaiore to Follonica.

The eight-day stage race Tirreno-Adriatico is normally held in the spring, in the week before Milan-Sanremo. Among the participants of this edition during the Tour are Mathieu van der Poel, Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas and Vicenzo Nibali.
