De Boer comes with explanation after Milling change: ‘Easily talk from the side’

National coach Frank de Boer explained the Donyell Malen/Quincy Promes exchange. That caused a lot of astonishment. According to De Boer, it has to do with Malens physical abilities.
After the red card of Matthijs de Ligt, De Boer surprised with the exchange of Malen for Promes, who did not fit well. โ€œDonyell is a very explosive player who is at his tax after sixty minutes in these types of matches. My plan was to bring in Weghorst for Donyell, but when we went to play 4-4-1 you need someone who can go up and down the line and stand defensively his man,โ€ explains De Boer at the CCEIT.
Pierre van Hooijdonk called the change โ€œa lawyer.โ€ Wesley Sneijder and Rafael van der Vaart were also critical. โ€œIt
s easy to talk from the side. We know Donyell is a fantastic player, but after 60 to 70 minutes the cake will be up. Then you have to switch. Hence the choice to switch it. Be critical, but Im closest to it. I know what the boys are like, this was predicted by us. I wanted to play 3-3-3 with Berghuis on the right, Promes on the left and Weghorst in rush hour. Shortly before, the 0-2 fell, so that could be trashed.โ€
At De Boer, defeat prevails. โ€œThis is a hangover that lasts for a while. I lost the semifinals on penalties that we should have gone on,โ€ he refers to the semifinals in 2000. โ€œThat doesn
t just wear out. We need to get back there immediately when we get together. At the moment, the feelings are so strong that you dont want to think about that.โ€
