De Boer on Cillessen issue: “In my eyes there was almost no difference”

National coach Frank de Boer made a controversial choice for the European Cup by leaving Jasper Cillessen at home. The Valencia goalkeeper was first choice at Orange last final tournament in 2014, but lost weight last summer after he had to stay home due to a corona infection.
Cillessen might have been able to go in the course of the tournament, but received a cancellation from De Boer and was blazing about it. We didnt know how long it would take, I knew I had two good goalkeepers on my hand too, De Boer looks back as a table guest at Rondo, aiming at Maarten Stekelenburg and Tim Krul. We have to make a choice: will he sit on the couch two, three games first and then play? What if the goalkeeper does a great job? Should I put it on the couch?
De Boer feared that the group process would be disrupted if Cillessen would indeed end up on the couch. He
s well in the group, but what would happen if he was second goalkeeper? Thats not his thing. Stekelenburg eventually became the first choice under the bar, after leaving an incredibly good impression during the workouts. The goalkeepers had little escape, emphasizes De Boer. If it was such a big difference, I would have wanted to take the risk, it sounds. There was a bit of that doubt. Maybe he had been the first goalkeeper, but in my eyes there was almost no difference.
