De Jong shines in the final: ‘It’s unbelievable’

He was ready when Julen Lopetegui needed him, Luuk de Jong assured the Seville trainer several times. And not a word had been lied to. De Jong shone in the Europa League final on Friday evening against Internazionale (3-2 victory), with two points of headlines.

And that while the 29-year-old striker had to start on the bench every time in the previous three games. “The coach told me this morning that I would start”, a radiant De Jong told after the game. “I might not have expected it at all, but said I was ready. It’s nice that you can repay that trust in such a way.”

After ten minutes De Jong hit goal for the first time, with a header à la Bep Bakhuys, fully stretched floating towards the ball. “Jesús Navas’ cross was perfect and I dive it in at the first post.”

Seville finally won 3-2 and De Jong got to shine with the Europa League trophy. “It’s unbelievable. We had such difficult matches, against Inter, Manchester United, Wolves and AS Roma. But we played as well as a team. We were really a family, we worked for each other.”

“You saw that today”, continued De Jong, who was also named Man of the Match. “It was tough, we started well, but out of nowhere they scored from a penalty. And then I make two with the head. Unbelievable.”
