Dead and wounded after gas explosion in Chinese City

A massive gas explosion in the city of Shiyan, in the northwest of Hubei Province of China, has killed at least 12 people and injured 138 people, according to state media and local authorities. Of the wounded, 37 are in bad shape.

Around 6:30 a.m. (local time), a gas pipeline would have exploded in a building. China Daily newspaper reported that the first floor of the affected property was set up as a market. People lived up there.

On social media, images circulate showing how rescue workers are working between damaged houses in the city. The cause of the incident is still being investigated, according to the city council.

All the wounded were transported to the hospital. The authorities have set up a command centre in the affected residential area to help the victims and search for people under the rubble.
