A special day for Nyck de Vries. The Dutch race car driver drove for the first time in a Formula One car and was immediately allowed to sit in the fastest car. Namely in the Mercedes of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.
The 25-year-old De Vries was champion in Formula 2 last year and has since been driving Mercedes in Formula E, the racing class for electric cars. During today‘s ‘Young Driver Test‘ he pushed some seats.
“ What a crazy car, it really is from another planet”, said a cheerful De Vries after his rounds on the track in Abu Dhabi. “I was amazed at how quickly I felt comfortable in it.”
The Formula 1 season has been over since last weekend, but the tests for the new year have already begun. De Vries clocked the second fastest time of the day and was faster than his teammate Stoffel Vandoorne.
On the day full of young drivers came the fastest lap of almost 40 years old. Two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso makes his return at Renault next year and got permission to ride on the test day.
De Vries stays in Formula E
For De Vries, this doesn’t say anything about the chance of a future in Formula 1. Just like the Belgian Vandoorne, he will also be released in Formula E.
