PSV did not do itself a good service when visiting Olympiakos. The team of Roger Schmidt scored twice, but once again took too many hits. Because of the 4-2 defeat, in a week with two goals difference will have to be won in your own home. Thus, survival in the Europa League becomes a difficult task.
With the returned Mario Götze in the base, for the first time since December 22, but without Mohamed Ihattaren PSV started the duel at the leader of Greece. The first minutes passed rather noiselessly, but the first chance was the hit for the home team. Mathieu Valbuena perfectly laid a free kick on the head of Andreas Bouchalakis, who left Yvon Mvogo with a headball without a chance.
On the other hand, too, it was fast hit. After a weak shot by Donyell Malen, Eran Zahavi was sure. The shot of the striker was changed direction, causing José Sá to stand on the wrong leg. There were few real opportunities in the first half, but almost every chance was hit. Just as PSV stood with a man less because of an injury at Olivier Boscagli, Olympiakos struck again. Yann M‘Vila was able to pull out completely detached and saw his shot rotate exactly in the far corner. Again the Eindhovenaren reacted quickly and again it was Zahavi. The Israeli headed this time handsome hit.
However, PSV did not get the peace with an equal stand. Timo Baumgartl, who had just replaced Boscagli, was asleep building up and Youssef El Arabi took advantage of it. The German mandekker went wrong a little later, but this time it failed to strike as accurate Olympiakos. In between there was a nice shot opportunity for Zahavi, but it turned out not every attempt party for the goldcock of the evening.
After rest PSV seemed to have a bit better in the back and it came to a few menacing moments. Of course, Zahavi was once again involved. This time his free kick spattered on the pole.
The Greeks kept to themselves as the first half progressed mainly more and more engaged in restraining. This while PSV didn’t want to take all sorts of risks, knowing that in seven days there will be a return in its own home. A few times the Eindhovenaren showed up in the enemy penalty area, but always the danger was undone.
In the final phase Olympiakos turned on a few more times with a few fresh forces. At first Jordan Teze prevented an almost certain goal with a great sliding, but a little later it was a hit. Georgios Masouras had far too much freedom after a poor interception of Philipp Max, when he was able to pull out from the edge of the penalty area and Mvogo was able to take the ball out of the net for the fourth time in the evening.
PSV knows so that it has to go to the bin next week during the return. Then you have to win with at least two goals difference to make a round in the Europa League.
