Memphis Depay excelled on Sunday night against Bosnia and Herzegovina and did so as to the left. Was it a golden move by coach Frank de Boer to use Depay, who was always at the forefront under Ronald Koeman, as a winger?
“ He was hard to stop, although the opponent was not strong,” says Theo Janssen in Studio Football. “It has been a long time since I have seen him go deep without a ball,” says Pierre van Hooijdonk. “Now he did.”
“ You have to give him freedom,” says Rafael van der Vaart. “You should be able to do that as a coach. I enjoyed him from the first minute to the last minute.”
De Boer opts for Luuk de Jong in the rush hour and Depay in a free role on the left. “Depay didn‘t have to be on the left too much, because Owen Wijndal (left-back, red.) was already playing very deep,” says Arno Vermeulen. Van Hooijdonk also thinks that: “On the left, it’s not a problem.”
“Wine aldum should always be there.”
Georginio Wijnaldum returned against Bosnia to the place he had under Koeman, that of attacking midfielder. He won his performance with two goals. In the previous two matches against Spain and Italy, Donny van de Beek acted as an offensive midfielder.
“ I prefer to see Wijnaldum in this position,” says Janssen. “Here lies its quality.”
Vermeulen: “He always delivers on this position. If we all need to help De Boer a little bit, then Wijnaldum should always be there. Point.”
“ Wherever you put him, he always scores a six,” says Janssen. Van Hooijdonk: “That‘s a bit of his pitfall.”
The question is whether De Boer should change anything against Poland on Wednesday. “No”, says Van der Vaart. Van Hooijdonk joins the following: “We have seen the best hour under De Boer.”
Blind child from the account?
Owen Wijndal has also shown itself in the past two interlands and the guests are allowed to stand at the table for the time being as a left-back. “If he continues to develop,” says Van der Vaart. “Otherwise, Daley Blind will just be left back.”
“ Blind is the best all-rounder of all, but he can take it against specialists,” says Van Hooijdonk. “For the national coach, he is a reliable factor.”
Ryan Babel won’t be in Poland on Wednesday because of a positive corontest. For a place in the EK selection, the 33-year-old attacker remains a distinguished candidate. Federal coach De Boer spoke praiseously about the role that Babel plays within the group.
As far as Van der Vaart is concerned, Babel does not have to come with us to the “I thought Mexico would be his last game,” says Van der Vaart. Vermeulen understands that De Boer likes to keep Babel. “He fell well against Spain. Something always happens when he falls in.”
